The Entre Covas Valdeorras Festival is a cultural initiative by the Ruta do Viño de Valdeorras that highlights the caves as a unique heritage through wine and gastronomic experiences, as well as performing arts.
These cultural events will include a magic show, a concert of traditional Galician oral music, and a contemporary dance performance, held over three Fridays in June, July, and August.
Scope of the proposal
The “ENTRE COVAS” festival will materialize through the celebration of three enogastronomic experiences in the caves. These are gatherings aimed at showcasing the main heritage resource of the Ruta do Viño Valdeorras Association, which are the caves, giving them a different use from their usual one. Each of these gatherings will aim to highlight different performing arts.
Each of these events has a capacity limited to 50 people due to the reduced space available. The first event will take place at the Cova da Xabreira, in the Seadur caves area, on June 20 at 8:00 PM. The second event will be held at As Pinguelas, combining three caves from associated wineries. Attendees will be welcomed in Melillas with a wine and cave visit, then the concert will take place at Joaquín Rebolledo, and will end at Alan with a tasting of wines and tapas. This event will take place on July 18 at 8:00 PM. The last event will be at Bodegas Blare in the municipality of O Barco on September 19 at 8:00 PM.
The artists selected to carry out each of the chosen proposals are as follows:
1.- Magic show June 20 in Seadur at 8:00 PM (Cova da Xabreira)
Joshua Kenneth
TASTING THE IMPOSSIBLE
Tasting the Impossible is a work suitable for all audiences created by the Galician-British illusionist Joshua Kenneth. In this selection of impossibles made real, the audience’s perception is distorted with striking visual and poetic elements such as soap post-its, silk cloths, or shadow puppets. Seventy minutes of amazement, humor, and mystery mixed with a bit of the history of illusionism. An interactive, fun, and artistic experience that invites the audience into a world where everything can be transformed and nothing is impossible. This format by Joshua Kenneth is close-up magic, perfectly adaptable to small spaces, a personalized show in which Joshua creates moments of magic where the Ruta do Viño and the Covas can be protagonists, using an image, the name itself, or whatever we consider of interest.
2.- Concert of traditional Galician oral music July 18 in A Rúa at 8:00 PM (Covas of Adega Melillas, Joaquín Rebolledo, and Alan de Val)
Carmela
MUSIC | Traditional
Carmela is a musical project that bases its repertoire on Galician oral tradition, through storytelling and hand percussion as defining elements. Beginning work from informants and musical archives, the aim of the project is to bring to the stage the essence of these melodies accompanied by a personal and current vision, using not only aesthetic criteria, but also others linked to musical and contextual analysis of the music being worked on, an approach that combines ethnomusicological research with interpretation and musical arrangement. Carmela uses tradition as a flexible and plastic entity that adapts to the current musical context through sounds ranging from percussion to electronic references. A different project in its musical and extramusical discourse that positions oral tradition and gender perspective at the center.
Carmela is the musical vision of Carme López, a project born in 2022 performing on stage with different scenic proposals, and releasing in November 2024 her first album: Venid todas (released with the Microscopi record label). The album presentation will consist of a live performance in trio format.
3.- Performance of a contemporary dance piece September 19 in Vilanova at 8:00 PM (Cova de Bodegas Blare)
Fran Sieira
A CEIBE DANCE
DANZA
After the success of Demente, Fran Sieira Dance Company presents CEIBE, a contemporary piece reflecting traditional dance and music that investigates the relationship between gender and our tradition. Ceibe delves into how gender is present in different areas, including such an important cultural manifestation as traditional dance.
Ceibe seeks to understand what gender is for us as individuals, as a collective, and also as a society. It reflects on gender categories and socially imposed stereotypes to distance itself from norms and push them toward the margins, from which new ways to understand the body and movement are constructed.
In each of these events, in addition to the performance, attendees will be able to enjoy three wines from the six references available from the wineries associated with the Ruta do Viño, and cold tapas served by Cova da Xabreira, Paladium, and Pazo del Castro, included in the ticket price. The cost of the ticket per show is €25. Those who wish to attend all three shows can purchase a pass costing €60.
Tickets can be purchased at Tono y Son music store in O Barco or via the following FORMULARIO
Additionally, attendees of the festival will enjoy special conditions at the accommodations Rectoral de Seadur, Pacio del Sil, and Pazo del Castro.
